This is a type of enduro race where riders follow a set course with checkpoints (time controls) along the way.

Usually run in big forest areas or open moorland. Riders start in rows, then complete as many laps as possible in a fixed time (often 2–3 hours).

The winner is simply the rider who completes the most laps in the time — if tied, it’s whoever crossed the line first.

It’s much more of a straightforward endurance race than a time card enduro, and generally easier for newcomers to understand.

• Contact one of the Enduro clubs in Scotland and they will guide you through joining, getting your licence or membership, and entering your first event
• Clubs are very supportive of new riders and will help with advice, paperwork, and event entry

• Bike - Goes without saying.
• Helmet – ACU Gold–stamped (full-face off-road style).
• Goggles (roll-offs for mud advisable).
• Gloves – off-road type with good grip.
• Jersey & trousers – enduro/motocross kit (durable, lightweight).
• Body armour – chest, back, shoulders, and elbows.
• Knee protection – either knee guards or proper knee braces.
• Enduro boots – strong motocross/enduro boots (ankle support is vital).
• Hydration pack (CamelBak type) – highly recommended for longer events.

• Offroad suitable bike, often see Enduro & MX
• Number boards (SACU race numbers, front & side).
• Chain guard & bar ends (mandatory for safety).
• Working kill switch.
• Silencer with enduro insert (noise tested at events).
• Road kit if required – lights, horn, speedo, and registration plate (some Scottish events use public roads to link stages).
• Mousses or heavy-duty tubes – to prevent punctures.

Not mandatory, but very handy:

• Spare goggles & gloves (mud races can destroy your first set fast).
• Tool belt or bum bag with tyre levers, plug spanner, zip ties, duct tape.
• Fuel can (you’ll need to refuel at designated pits).
• Stand & mat (some events require an environmental mat in the pits).
• Warm clothing / waterproofs for before & after the race (Scottish weather is never guaranteed!).
• Food & drink – easy-to-digest snacks, bananas, energy bars.

Check your bike –

• Fuelled
• Chain lubed
• Brakes and tyres in good condition
• Consider camping the night before – gives you time to get settled, walk some of the track, and socialise with other riders

Bring your kit –

• Helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, chest/back protection, waterproofs
• Documents – licence (if required), club membership card, entry confirmation, and any waivers signed

• Arrive early – at least 1–1.5 hours before your start time

• Sign-on / registration – collect rider number, timing transponder (if used), and route maps

• Bike scrutineering – marshals will check your bike is safe (brakes, tyres, throttle, noise level, etc.)

• Rider briefing – covers course layout, safety rules, emergency procedures, and time schedules

• Prepare for your start – fit your number plate/transponder, fuel up, hydrate, and bring snacks

• During the event – follow course markers and marshal instructions, ride within your limits, let faster riders past.

• After the event – return your transponder, check results, and enjoy finishing your ride.

• Focus on finishing and enjoying the ride, not being the fastest
• Walk some of the special stages before riding if possible
• Pack spare gloves, goggles, and extra fuel
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions – the community is welcoming

Enduro races take place on various types of off-road terrains, including:

• Dirt trails
• Forest tracks
• Rocky hillsides
• Mud, sand, or gravel

These natural environments make the sport demanding, requiring both mental and physical stamina.

Enduro bikes are specially designed for off-road riding and long-distance endurance. They are generally lighter and more agile than motocross bikes, with features like:

• Soft suspension for rugged terrain
• Durable components to withstand impacts from rocks and roots
• Knobby tires for traction on loose or slippery surfaces
• Lighting and other accessories, since some events can last from dawn to dusk or even longer.
  

Note you will see a mixture of different bikes riding enduro, from enduro specific to mx, to adventure bikes.
