Hare & Hounds
Enduro Explained
Lap-based enduro racing where the whole course is the race. Here’s how the format, timing and pacing work.
Race the marked course for the set duration and complete as many laps as you can.
How Hare & Hounds Works
The course is shorter than a traditional Time Card Enduro and riders repeatedly lap the marked route for a set period. There is no separate special test: the race itself is the competition. Your result is based on the laps you complete, with event timing used to separate riders where required.
Ride the Lap
Follow the marked off-road course and return through timing to start another lap.
Manage Your Pace
You are racing throughout, but going too hard at the start can make the final part of the event very long.
Count the Laps
The aim is to complete as many laps as possible within the event duration.
Time Card vs Hare & Hounds
If you are new to enduro, this guide explains the difference between the two main formats and where Hare & Hounds fits into Scottish enduro racing.
Watch Hare & Hounds in Action
The format stays broadly the same, but the terrain can change completely from one venue to the next. These BRAAP Scotland films show Hare & Hounds racing on different Scottish courses.

How Long Do You Ride For?
The duration is set by the organiser in the event regulations. SACU describes most Hare & Hounds events as being around three hours, although longer endurance events can also be run. Always use the supplementary regulations for the event you are entering.
Race the Whole Event
No time-card schedule or separate special test. You keep racing laps of the course for the set duration.
Race the Tests, Manage the Time
Riders follow a schedule between controls and race timed special tests. Timekeeping is part of the challenge.

Do Not Win Lap One
Your pace has to last. A controlled first lap is usually more useful than blowing yourself up immediately.
Prepare to Refuel
Know the event rules and your bike range. Have fuel and anything you need in the permitted refuelling or paddock area.
Keep Moving
Mistakes happen. Pick the bike up, settle down and carry on rather than turning one bad section into a bad race.
