Can Kids Start Off-Road Motorcycling in Scotland?

Children can start off-road riding through Enduro, Motocross or Trials, with the right bike size, coaching and beginner-friendly environment.

Children can get into off-road motorcycling through Enduro, Motocross and Trials, but the right starting point depends on age, bike size, confidence and the opportunities available locally.

The important thing is not to rush straight into competition. A coached session or beginner-friendly club environment can let a young rider discover whether they actually enjoy being on a motorcycle.

Enduro for young riders

Enduro can combine riding skills, endurance, changing terrain and the social side of club events. In BRAAP's Glendearg film, young riders talk about first races, nerves, friendships and progressing at their own pace.

See the Scottish Enduro guide for the wider route into the discipline.

Motocross for young riders

Motocross gives young riders a defined track environment where they can build skills through practice before considering competition. Bike size, session rules and age classes matter, so parents should check directly with the venue or organiser.

Use the BRAAP Motocross guide and track directory to understand the Scottish scene.

Trials for young riders

Trials develops balance, clutch control, grip and precision. Because the challenge is technical rather than simply about speed, it offers a very different introduction to motorcycle sport.

Jamie Galloway's BRAAP story shows one possible pathway: starting very young and progressing through the sport to world championship level.

Does a child need their own bike immediately?

Not necessarily. If a suitable provider offers hire bikes and kit, trying the sport first can help a family avoid buying the wrong size or type of motorcycle. Use the BRAAP training guide to find coaching and beginner-focused options.

Does a child need to race?

No. Practice, coaching and skill development are valuable on their own. Racing can come later if the young rider wants it.

Where should parents begin?

Use the BRAAP Kids Dirt Bike & Parent Guide to compare the main disciplines, then look for an organised club, venue or coaching provider that works with young riders.
