How listings work: every venue uses the same baseline fields — discipline, area, beginner suitability, youth access, training, bike hire, pay-and-play access, map location and a current-status source. Featured BRAAP partners can have richer film/photo coverage, but the basic directory is not pay-to-exist.

Where Can You Legally Ride A Dirt Bike?

Scotland has wide outdoor access rights, but those rights do not give a general right to use motorcycles or other motor vehicles on forestry roads, paths, beaches or open countryside.

For most riders, the simplest legal options are organised motocross tracks, enduro events, trials venues, training centres and private land where you have clear lawful permission to ride.

Do not assume that a track is legal to ride simply because it is open, appears unused or is accessible to walkers and cyclists.

Quick Guide

Forestry Roads & Paths

Public access for walking or cycling does not automatically mean motorised access is allowed.

Private Land

You need clear permission or other lawful authority to ride. Other legal, insurance, noise or environmental requirements may still apply.

Public Roads

A dirt bike can only be ridden on public roads if the bike and rider meet the normal legal requirements for road use.

Check directly before travelling

Always check booking details, opening times, safety rules, bike requirements, licences, noise limits, age limits and kit requirements before you go.

Legal Riding

Organised, legal and permission-based

Braap Scotland aims to highlight organised, legal and permission-based riding opportunities. Do not ride on private land, forestry roads, public paths or open countryside without clear permission.

FAQ

Where to ride off-road in Scotland FAQ

Where can I ride a dirt bike legally in Scotland?

The safest place to start is with organised off-road venues, events, club practice days, training centres or private land where you have clear lawful permission. Scotland’s outdoor access rights do not give a general right to use motor vehicles on forestry roads, public paths or open countryside. See the Legal Riding section above for a quick guide.

Can beginners try off-road riding in Scotland?

Yes. Some venues and training providers offer beginner-friendly sessions, coaching, bike hire or controlled practice areas. Always check directly with the venue before booking.

Do I need my own bike?

Some venues may offer bike or kit hire, while many clubs and events require riders to bring their own motorcycle and equipment. Check the requirements before travelling.

What is the difference between enduro, motocross and trials?

Enduro usually involves longer off-road routes, loops or timed sections. Motocross takes place on a closed dirt track with jumps and racing. Trials is slower and more technical, focusing on balance, control and riding over obstacles.

How can my venue get listed?

Venue owners, clubs, coaches and event organisers can contact Braap Scotland to suggest a listing or enquire about a filmed feature with video, photography and written content.
