Event Licences Scotland

Entering an Enduro, Motocross or Trials event in Scotland? This guide explains competition licences, one-event licences, club membership and what to check before entering.

Quick Answer

Racing? Check the event first.

Organised competition normally has licence and entry requirements. Practice days, coaching and experience sessions can work differently. The event regulations are the final word.

What licence do I need to enter an event?

For organised motorcycle competition, usually yes. The exact licence or registration depends on the discipline, organiser and event.

A training day, coaching session or practice day is not automatically the same as entering a race. Some events may also offer an eligible one-event licence instead of requiring a full annual competition licence.

Who Governs The Sport?

SACU in Scotland

The Scottish Auto Cycle Union is the governing body for motorcycle sport in Scotland. SACU-affiliated clubs organise many Enduro, Motocross and Trials events. Before entering, check the current event regulations and licence requirements.

Licence Routes

Annual licence or one-event option?

There is no single answer that applies to every Scottish off-road event. These are the four checks that matter before you enter.

Step 1

Annual Licence

For riders competing through the season, the appropriate annual competition licence or registration is normally the main route. The exact type depends on the discipline and current governing-body rules.

Step 2

One Event Licence

Some events may allow an eligible rider to compete using a one-event licence. Never assume it is available: check the supplementary regulations before entering.

Step 3

Club Membership

Many Scottish events are organised through affiliated clubs and may require current club membership or proof of membership at sign-on.

Step 4

Event Regulations

The event's supplementary regulations and final instructions are the authority for that meeting. Check them before paying, travelling or preparing the bike.

By Discipline

Enduro, Motocross and Trials

Choose the discipline you actually want to ride, then work backwards from a real event. That is the simplest way to avoid buying the wrong licence or missing a club requirement.

Enduro

Scottish Enduro and Hare & Hounds events normally sit within SACU's off-road competition structure. Check the event entry for the licence accepted, club requirements and whether a one-event option is available.

Motocross

Race meetings can require the appropriate competition licence, club membership and confirmed entry. Practice days may operate differently, so do not treat practice and racing as the same thing.

Trials

Trials has its own competition and registration requirements. If you are new, a local club or event organiser is the best place to confirm what is needed for that specific trial.

Important Difference

Competition licence ≠ road licence

A competition licence is not the same thing as the licence that allows you to ride a motorcycle on public roads.

If an event uses public-road sections, check the regulations carefully for road-licence, registration, insurance and machine requirements.

Club Membership

Find the club behind the event

Club membership can be part of the entry process. Finding the relevant club first also gives you somewhere to ask about classes, licences, sign-on and first-event expectations.

Quick Answers

Event Licence FAQ

Do I need a licence just to ride a dirt bike?

Not automatically. Training, coaching and practice can have different requirements from organised competition. Check the venue or organiser.

Can I race with a one-event licence?

Some events may allow eligible riders to use a one-event licence. Availability and eligibility depend on the event, so read the current regulations before entering.

Do I need to join a club?

Many events and licence routes are connected to affiliated clubs, and some meetings may require proof of club membership at sign-on.

Is a competition licence the same as my road bike licence?

No. They are different. If an event uses public roads, separate road-licence, registration and insurance requirements may apply.

What should I check before entering?

Licence type, one-event eligibility, club membership, rider class, age restrictions, bike and helmet rules, noise limits, road sections and the documents required at sign-on.

Next Step

Choose an event, then check its rules

The easiest way to make sense of licences is to start with a real event. Find the discipline and date you want, then use the organiser's current regulations to confirm exactly what you need.
